Hansley, a North Carolina native, has been involved actively in the visual arts since 1971. He has owned and operated Lee Hansley Gallery since February 5, 1993. The focus of the gallery is modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on the art history of North Carolina. Prior to opening the gallery, he was a curator at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston Salem. At SECCA he was responsible for all external exhibitions and traveling shows including annual exhibitions of winners of the national Awards in the Visual Arts program. For five years while at SECCA he was the principal art consultant to The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States in New York City and at it's six regional service centers in Fresno, Des Moines, Columbus, OH, Charlotte, Colorado Springs, and Milford, CN.
Since moving to Raleigh in 1986, Hansley has curated major restrospectives of the works of Edith London and Silvia Heyden, as well as a show commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Durham Art Guild and a comprehensive show of the collection of the former Central Carolina Bank. He has curated and organized over 200 exhibitions since opening his gallery. In his role as curator, he has compiled and authored over 35 exhibition catalogues. He has served as judge and/or juror for over 50 competitions, including the prestigious Winter Park Arts Festival in Florida.
